GapSeat is designed for one specific problem: finding vacant berths on Indian Railways trains after chart preparation, especially when IRCTC shows a train as fully booked. This guide walks through every step of using GapSeat from download to booking.
GapSeat is available free on the Google Play Store. Search for "GapSeat" or scan the QR code from the GapSeat website. No account creation, IRCTC login, or subscription is required to use the app.
On the home screen, enter the 5-digit train number. You can find the train number on your existing ticket, on IRCTC, or by searching on Indian Railways' official website. Examples:
Choose the date of your journey. GapSeat will load the relevant chart data for that train on that date. If chart preparation has not yet happened (more than 4–6 hours before departure), the app will indicate that the chart is not yet available.
Indian Railways prepares the final chart for reserved coaches roughly 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure from the source station. This is the critical moment — before chart preparation, data changes frequently. After chart preparation, GapSeat can read stable, reliable vacancy information.
After chart preparation, GapSeat displays all vacant berths for your train. Each result includes:
If no single berth is available for your entire journey, GapSeat suggests seat hopping combinations. For example, Berth A available Delhi to Kota + Berth B available Kota to Mumbai = your full Delhi to Mumbai journey covered. You physically move to the second berth at Kota.
GapSeat shows you what is available but does not handle booking. To claim a vacant berth:
Best Results: Use GapSeat immediately after chart preparation — within the first 10–15 minutes. Vacancies go fast on popular trains and routes. The earlier you check, the more options you see.
