About GapSeat

Updated: October 24, 2026

GapSeat is built and run by Sunil Kumar, an independent developer. It is not made by IRCTC, Indian Railways or CRIS, and no railway body pays for or approves it.

Why GapSeat exists

A train can show "WL" or "No seats" on IRCTC and still run with empty berths. People cancel late, don't turn up, or book only part of the route. Once the reservation chart is prepared, those gaps are visible, but they are spread across coaches and station pairs, so they are hard to see by hand.

GapSeat reads the published chart and lists the berths that look free between your boarding and destination stations. When no single berth covers the whole trip, it can suggest a seat-hopping path that joins two or more partial gaps.

What GapSeat does and doesn't do

  • It shows coach-wise berth gaps after the chart is prepared, for the train, date and stations you pick.
  • It doesn't book, sell, reserve or allot tickets or berths.
  • It doesn't need your IRCTC login or payment details.
  • To use a vacant berth you still need a valid ticket and a booking or TTE allotment through official railway channels.

The full method and its limits are on How GapSeat chart data works. Questions about official status, legality and safety are answered on Is GapSeat official, legal and safe?
