When a train's chart is prepared, seat availability is no longer
shown as a single number — it becomes a detailed record of which
exact berths are occupied and which are vacant, in every coach. This
coach-level data is what GapSeat reads to surface real vacancies.
What Is Coach-Wise Availability?
Indian Railways trains are divided into multiple coaches: Sleeper
(S1, S2, S3…), AC 3-Tier (B1, B2, B3…), AC 2-Tier (A1, A2…), and so
on. Each coach has a fixed number of berths (typically 64–72 in
Sleeper, 64 in 3AC). Coach-wise availability means knowing which
specific berths inside which specific coaches are vacant for which
station segments.
Why Coach-Level Data Matters
-
IRCTC only shows aggregate availability for the full route — it
hides partial vacancies at the coach level
-
A coach may show "no availability" source-to-destination but have
multiple berths free for intermediate segments
-
Knowing the exact coach and berth number lets you board
confidently and find the right seat
-
TTEs work coach-by-coach — knowing which coach has a vacancy helps
when coordinating during travel
How GapSeat Shows Coach-Wise Vacancies
After chart preparation, GapSeat scans the published chart for your
selected train. For each coach, it identifies berths that are:
- Completely unoccupied (no booking at all)
-
Partially occupied — vacant for a segment within your journey
- Freed by cancellations or no-shows after chart generation
Results are displayed with coach label (e.g., B2), berth number
(e.g., berth 34), berth type (Lower/Middle/Upper/Side Lower/Side
Upper), and the segment for which it is available.
Which Coaches Tend to Have More Vacancies?
-
Sleeper Class (S-coaches) — Highest vacancy rate
due to large number of berths and more intermediate bookings
-
3AC (B-coaches) — Moderate vacancies; popular but
business travelers cancel frequently
-
2AC (A-coaches) — Lower vacancy count but
higher-value individual berths; worth checking on Rajdhani routes
-
General/Unreserved (GN) — Not part of chart data;
open seating only
How to Check Coach-Wise Availability Using GapSeat
- Open GapSeat and enter your train number
- Select travel date
-
Wait for chart preparation (typically 4 hours before departure)
-
View results sorted by coach — each coach shows its vacant berths
-
Filter by class (Sleeper/3AC/2AC) to narrow down to your preferred
coach type
- Note the coach number and berth number
- Book the segment on IRCTC if available
Pro Tip: Lower-numbered coaches (B1, S1) tend to
be at the front or rear of longer trains and may have fewer
passengers boarding at intermediate stations. Middle coaches
(B3–B5) often have the most intermediate-segment activity.
