Side lower berths are among the most preferred in Indian Railways —
they face away from the main bay, offer better privacy, and allow
sitting upright during daytime without disturbing others. They are
also the berth type assigned to RAC passengers. After chart
preparation, GapSeat can tell you exactly which side lower berths
are vacant in your train.
What Is a Side Lower Berth?
In Sleeper Class (SL) and 3AC coaches, each coach has a main bay
with 6 berths (2 lower, 2 middle, 2 upper) and a side section with 2
berths: Side Lower and Side Upper. The Side Lower (SL) is:
-
Located perpendicular to the main bays, along the corridor side
- Narrower than a standard lower berth but more private
-
Preferred by solo travelers and senior passengers for easy access
and seating flexibility
-
Also used for RAC passengers (two RAC passengers share one side
lower)
Why Side Lower Berths Are Harder to Get
-
Only 2 side berths per bay section — much fewer than the 6 in the
main bay
-
Senior citizens and ladies booking quota often goes to lower and
side lower berths first
-
High demand from solo travelers who prefer the privacy of the side
section
-
Tatkal tickets also frequently assign side lower berths to
last-minute bookers
When Do Side Lower Berths Become Vacant After Chart?
-
A passenger booked for a partial segment (e.g., Delhi to Kanpur on
a Delhi–Mumbai train) vacates from Kanpur
-
Senior citizen or ladies-quota passenger cancels close to
departure
-
RAC passengers who were assigned a shared side lower are upgraded
to a main bay berth — the side lower then becomes free
- No-show by an assigned passenger frees the berth
How to Check Side Lower Vacancies Using GapSeat
- Open GapSeat and enter your train number
- Select travel date and wait for chart preparation
-
In the results list, look for berths labeled "Side Lower" or
filter by berth type if the filter option is available
-
Check which segment the side lower berth is available for — match
it with your journey
- Note the coach and berth number
- Book on IRCTC if the segment is available
Tip: Side lower berths in Sleeper class appear
more frequently as vacancies because they are regularly assigned
as RAC berths. When RAC passengers get confirmed upgrades on
departure, the side lower berth becomes fully free — GapSeat
captures this in real-time after chart.
