After a train's chart is prepared, every berth in every coach gets a confirmed status. GapSeat reads this published chart data and tells you exactly which berths are empty — with the coach name, berth number, berth type, and the station segment for which that berth is free.
The Indian Railways preparation chart lists every passenger's assigned berth, their boarding station, and their destination station. Any berth not assigned to any passenger for a given segment is vacant. GapSeat parses this information automatically and presents it in a readable format.
A berth can be occupied by passenger A from station 1 to station 3, and then unoccupied from station 3 onwards. GapSeat identifies and shows this partial availability so you can plan travel for the vacant segment. This is also the basis for seat hopping across multiple segments.
Yes — the physical printed chart pasted on each coach at the station shows all assigned passengers. Any blank slot in the chart represents an unassigned (potentially vacant) berth. GapSeat automates this manual chart-reading process and presents it digitally before the train departs.
Tip: Check GapSeat as soon as the chart is published. Empty berths are visible to all users of the app, so the most desirable ones (Lower, Side Lower) are claimed first.
